Understanding Fertility Challenges
Many people assume fertility will simply “work” when the time comes—but for many women and couples, it’s more complex. A wide range of factors can interfere with the body’s natural reproductive balance. While Western medicine can identify and treat some causes of infertility, many cases remain unexplained because health assessments are incomplete.
A Whole-Body Approach to Fertility Care
Chinese Medicine has supported fertility for over two thousand years. Acupuncture for fertility is a central part of this approach, offering a whole-body perspective that looks for underlying imbalances rather than isolated symptoms.
Fertility acupuncture can:
Address patterns that Western medicine may not yet explain
Complement conventional fertility treatments
Support both diagnosed and unexplained infertility
This integrative approach allows us to work with what is already known—while also addressing what may be overlooked.
Unexplained Infertility and Physiological Balance
A significant percentage of women diagnosed with unexplained infertility are able to conceive naturally with the kind of support we offer, including individualized fertility acupuncture treatments. When conception is difficult, there is almost always an underlying physiological reason—something affecting the body’s ability to conceive or maintain a pregnancy.
Acupuncture supports fertility by helping to:
Regulate hormonal and reproductive function
Improve circulation to the uterus and ovaries
Calm the nervous system and reduce stress
Support the body’s ability to sustain a healthy pregnancy
Supporting Fertility Through Environmental Changes
The encouraging news is that many fertility challenges respond well to changes in the body’s internal and external environment. These changes may include:
Nutritional and lifestyle adjustments
- Targeted Nutritional Supplements
Stress reduction and nervous system support
These therapies work together to create conditions that support healing and reproductive health. While some factors—such as certain genetic or immune conditions—may be beyond environmental control, the majority of fertility challenges can be meaningfully improved with consistent, supportive care that includes acupuncture and holistic medicine.

Comprehensive Fertility Evaluation for Individuals and Couples
At least 25% of women hoping to conceive experience difficulty becoming pregnant, and the reasons can vary widely. If there is a male partner, realize they are just as likely to contribute as female factors, which is why we take a comprehensive, inclusive approach from the very beginning.
Your care begins with an in-depth initial consultation with Dr. George Mandler, Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, to develop a personalized fertility plan. For this visit, we ask that you bring any fertility-related lab work and medical records from the past couple of years. If there are two partners contributing, we ask that each complete intake forms so we can thoughtfully evaluate the health of each person involved and determine the most supportive path forward.
This initial consultation is a time to understand your unique fertility situation. No two people are the same, and our approach reflects that individuality.
Acupuncture Support During IVF and Assisted Reproductive Care
If you are undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF), we work collaboratively with you and your reproductive endocrinologist. Fertility acupuncture and massage can be valuable supports during IVF protocols, helping to improve overall outcomes while also easing the physical and emotional side effects of fertility medications.
Treating the Root of Infertility
In many cases, fertility care moves quickly toward assisted reproductive technologies. While these tools can be important, this rapid transition can leave underlying contributors to infertility unaddressed. These may include:
Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation
Immune or inflammatory imbalances
Hormonal irregularities
Nutritional deficiencies, even in those taking supplements
Male fertility factors also deserve careful attention. Although infertility is just as likely to involve male factor as female factor, it is often under-examined. A standard semen analysis offers limited insight into overall reproductive health, and acupuncture, lifestyle changes, and functional approaches can play an important role in supporting male fertility.
Supporting Healthy Parents to Support Healthy Babies
Healthy children begin with healthy parents. Many physiological imbalances can be improved through lifestyle adjustments, acupuncture, herbal medicine, abdominal massage, and functional nutrition. As the body moves toward better balance, people often notice improvements in overall health and well-being, along with enhanced fertility.
Research shows that a baby’s health begins in utero, a concept central to Chinese medicine for over two thousand years. Supporting the body before conception helps create a more resilient foundation for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
This whole-body approach is one reason we encourage exploring functional and acupuncture-based care before proceeding with more invasive fertility technologies. Individualized, holistic medicine has been shown to improve live birth rates when used on its own or alongside IVF, compared with IVF alone.
Exploring Your Options with Confidence
Eve
n if you have been told you are of advanced maternal age or have diminished ovarian reserve, there are often ways to improve fertility potential. Functional nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and bodywork can address underlying imbalances and support reproductive health at its roots.
Our goal is to help create healthy parents who can support healthy pregnancies, healthy babies, and smoother postpartum recoveries. These holistic approaches not only support conception but also nurture the long-term health of the entire family.

In July 2007 I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and my gynecologist recommended hormonal treatment. As I didn’t feel ready to go that way, my husband and I decided I should try acupuncture.
In November 2007, I began acupuncture treatment with George Mandler. For 2½ months I had weekly appointments that were not only relaxing and enjoyable but also helped me get back into a good balance. After having had irregular periods for almost a year, they came back — the combination of the acupuncture and George’s knowledgeable advice on dietary changes worked tremendously. I appreciated his calm and reflective approach to Eastern medicine and Western science, as well as the peaceful atmosphere in the clinic.
I became pregnant in February 2008 and am feeling fantastic.
